The Japanese called it "Whistling Death." The F4U-4 was the version that earned the name last.

That sound. The distinctive whistle of air rushing through the oil cooler inlets in the wing roots as the Corsair dove on its target. Japanese troops on the ground heard it before they saw it. By the time they saw it, it was too late.

The F4U-4 was the final Corsair variant to see combat in the Second World War — and it was the best one. A more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800-18W engine with water injection pushed the -4 past 450 mph, making it one of the fastest piston-engine fighters in the Pacific. It carried the fight not just as an air superiority fighter but as a fighter-bomber — hauling bombs and rockets onto Japanese positions in the final island campaigns while still being fast and maneuverable enough to tangle with anything in the sky.

By the time the F4U-4 reached the fleet, the Corsair had already built its legend. The bent-wing bird had been terrorizing the Pacific since 1943 — Guadalcanal, Rabaul, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa. An 11-to-1 kill ratio in some theaters. Pappy Boyington's Black Sheep. The Marine squadrons that turned the Corsair from a Navy reject into the most feared fighter in the Pacific.

The F4U-4 was the version that took everything the earlier marks had proven and pushed it further. More power. More speed. More payload. The culmination of the Corsair line before the war ended. And when Korea started five years later, the F4U-4 was still there — still whistling, still killing.

The last and the best. Whistling Death in its final form.
