The Sturmtiger is one of those vehicles that makes people stop and say "they actually built that?"

Yes. They built it. On a Tiger I chassis. And it's exactly as insane as it sounds.

By 1943, the Wehrmacht had learned a brutal lesson at Stalingrad: urban combat eats conventional armor alive. Tanks couldn't elevate their guns high enough to hit upper floors. Infantry support guns didn't have the punch to collapse fortified buildings. What they needed was something that could roll up to a city block and erase it.

The answer was the 38 cm RW 61 — a 380mm rocket-propelled mortar mounted inside a massive armored superstructure on the Tiger I hull. Each round weighed 345 kilograms — over 750 pounds. The blast effect was devastating enough to level multi-story buildings in a single shot. The rounds were so large they had to be loaded through the breach with a crane mounted on the vehicle's rear deck.

The Sturmtiger carried only 14 rounds internally. When you're firing 380mm rocket mortars, you don't need many. Each one was a demolition charge with a guidance system called "aim at the building."

Germany built only 18 Sturmtigers. They saw limited action in the Ardennes, on the Western Front, and during the final defense of Germany. Like the Maus, the Sturmtiger exists in that category of German late-war engineering that sits somewhere between terrifying and absurd — a vehicle that proves how desperate the situation had become, and how far German engineers were willing to go to answer problems that couldn't be solved conventionally.
