The men who walked from Moscow to Berlin.
They called themselves frontoviki, the men of the front. The Red Army rifleman fought four years against the bulk of the German Army, from the outskirts of Moscow in the winter of 1941 to the steps of the Reichstag in the spring of 1945. The casualty figures are still hard to comprehend. They kept advancing anyway.
This team carries the weapons that got them there:
- SVT-40 — the Tokarev semi-automatic. In 1941 it gave Soviet riflemen something most German infantry didn’t have: a self-loading rifle. The Germans valued captured SVTs enough to issue them to their own troops. It was demanding to maintain in the field, which is part of why the Mosin stayed king.
- Mosin-Nagant M91/30 — built in the millions, the rifle that armed the Red Army from the first day of the war to the last. Simple, brutal, effective. Five rounds, iron sights, and the determination to push to Berlin.
- Scoped Mosin-Nagant M91/30 — the same rifle, selected for accuracy and fitted with an optic. The Red Army built its sniper force on the M91/30, and the men and women who carried it became some of the most feared soldiers on the Eastern Front. At Stalingrad, Vasily Zaitsev was credited with more than 200 kills with one.
- PPSh-41 — the papasha. A 71-round drum, roughly 900 rounds per minute, stamped steel built for mass production. It cleared Stalingrad house by house and pushed through Berlin street by street.
