1944. A new pattern, and a new idea: camouflage as the uniform itself.

Before 1944, German camouflage was mostly something worn over the uniform: smocks and helmet covers pulled over field-grey wool. The Erbsenmuster, or “pea pattern,” changed that. Introduced to the Waffen-SS in March 1944 as the M44 two-piece field uniform, it replaced both the drill tunic and the camouflage smock with a single tunic-and-trousers set, printed in a five-color dot pattern. Unlike the earlier smocks, it wasn’t reversible. The pattern was meant to work year-round, and it was worn from Normandy through the Ardennes to the final battles of 1945.

This team carries the four weapons at the core of a late-war German infantry squad:

  • Kar98k — the bolt-action that served from the first day of the war to the last. Straight bolt, classic Mauser profile.
  • MG 42 — “Hitler’s buzzsaw.” Roughly 1,200 rounds per minute, and the gun the rest of the squad existed to keep firing.
  • StG 44 — the first assault rifle to see widespread service. Curved 30-round magazine, intermediate cartridge, and the template for every assault rifle that followed.
  • MP 40 — the submachine gun of squad and section leaders.

The Waffen-SS was the armed branch of the SS, which the Nuremberg tribunal declared a criminal organization. We present these figures as history: uniforms and equipment depicted accurately, nothing glorified.
