Four men. Four faces of the British Army at war.

The British soldier fought the Second World War on more fronts than almost anyone: the Western Desert, Sicily, Italy, Normandy, the Low Countries. This team puts four of those men side by side.

The Paras. British airborne forces adopted the maroon beret in 1942, and it didn’t take long to earn a reputation. After the fighting in Tunisia in 1943, the 1st Parachute Brigade picked up a nickname reportedly coined by the Germans who faced them: die roten Teufel, the Red Devils. Over the beret, the Denison smock: the broad brushstroke camouflage credited to Major Gerald Denison and one of the most recognizable patterns ever worn. It went into Normandy on D-Day and into Arnhem in September 1944, where the 1st Airborne Division held on at the north end of the bridge far longer than the plan ever expected them to have to.

The Tommies. Mk II Brodie helmet. Lee-Enfield No.4 with the spike bayonet fixed. 1937 Pattern Web Equipment carrying everything a rifleman owned. One in wool battledress for Northwest Europe. One in Khaki Drill for the desert and the Mediterranean, the uniform of the Eighth Army men who fought from El Alamein to Tunisia.

From the desert to Arnhem. One team on your shelf.
