Late-war German Army infantry. Four weapons that defined the squad.
Sumpfmuster, “marsh pattern,” was introduced by the Heer in 1943 and printed on reversible winter suits and smocks: camouflage on one side, white on the other. It became the look of the German Army infantryman for the last two years of the war, from Normandy to the Vistula. This is standard army infantry, Heer and not Waffen-SS, with Heer insignia to match.
The team carries the four weapons at the core of a late-war German infantry squad:
- MG 42 — the belt-fed heart of the squad. Roughly 1,200 rounds per minute. Allied soldiers said it sounded like ripping cloth and called it “Hitler’s buzzsaw.” The rest of the squad existed to keep this gun firing.
- Kar98k — the bolt-action that stayed in service to the very end, because Germany never built enough semi-automatic rifles to replace it. Reliable, accurate, and in the hands of nearly every rifleman.
- MP 40 — the submachine gun carried by squad and section leaders.
- StG 44 — the first assault rifle to see widespread service. Selective fire, 30-round magazine, intermediate cartridge. It defined the category every modern assault rifle belongs to. It also arrived too late and in too few numbers to change the outcome.
