Look at it. Just look at it. Two P-51 Mustang fuselages joined at the wing and horizontal stabilizer. It looks like someone took America's best fighter and said "what if we built two of them and bolted them together?"

That's essentially what happened.

By 1944, the USAAF was planning for the invasion of Japan and needed a fighter that could escort B-29 Superfortresses on extremely long-range missions over the Pacific — distances so vast that even the legendary P-51D couldn't cover them without drop tanks that compromised performance. The solution was the F-82 Twin Mustang: two fuselages, two Merlin engines (later Allison), two pilots who could alternate flying on marathon escort missions that lasted over 12 hours.

The F-82E was the escort fighter variant — the one built for the mission that inspired the whole concept. With two pilots sharing the workload, one could fly while the other navigated, monitored instruments, or rested. It was crew resource management decades before the term existed.

The Twin Mustang never got to escort B-29s to Tokyo — the war ended first. But the F-82 went on to serve in Korea, where a Twin Mustang scored the first three aerial victories of the Korean War on June 27, 1950. The aircraft that was built to end one war started the next one.

It's one of the most visually striking aircraft ever built. Two of everything. One wingspan. Pure American "why not?"
