The nightmare began in Stalingrad. Winter, 1942. German infantry fought building by building, room by room, against defenders who refused to break. Conventional tanks were death traps in the narrow streets. Armor that could survive the Eastern Front had no weapon large enough to collapse a fortified position in a single shot.
The German High Command demanded a solution: a vehicle with the armor of a heavy tank and the firepower to level a city block. The answer was the Sturmtiger. A 380mm naval rocket launcher, originally designed to sink submarines, mounted on the chassis of a Tiger I. Each round weighed over 700 pounds.
Only 18 were ever built. They saw action in the Warsaw Uprising, the Battle of the Bulge, and the final desperate defense of the Rhine. In one recorded engagement near Remagen, a single Sturmtiger round destroyed an entire column of Shermans.
