The last battleship America ever built, christened in January 1944 by the daughter of the President whose home state she carried. By early 1945 she was in the thick of the Pacific: gunfire support at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, a kamikaze off her starboard side, her sixteen-inch guns pounding the Japanese home islands. Then, on the morning of September 2nd, 1945, she anchored in Tokyo Bay as the flagship of Admiral Halsey. On her deck, General MacArthur and the Allied commanders watched the Japanese delegation sign the Instrument of Surrender. Six years of war, fifty million dead, and it all came to an end on the steel you are about to build, plank by plank, in your own home.
