Boeing built her in the 1930s for a job no one had done before: fly deep into enemy territory in daylight and come back. Four engines, a crew of ten, and so many defensive guns the press called her a Flying Fortress before she ever saw combat. Over Europe with the Eighth Air Force she became a legend, not for what she could destroy, but for what she could survive. Fortresses came home with engines dead, control cables severed, whole sections of fuselage torn away, and still they brought their crews back to base. One of the first to finish 25 missions and return stateside, the Memphis Belle, turned that legend into a household name.
