Every Panzer division in the Wehrmacht had a secret ingredient behind the tanks, the StuGs, and the infantry. It was the 15 cm sFH 18 — the standard German heavy divisional howitzer that provided the indirect fire support that made combined-arms warfare work.

The sFH 18 was a 150mm towed howitzer that entered service in 1934 and stayed in the German arsenal for the entire war. From Poland to France, from Barbarossa to the Bulge, the sFH 18 was the gun that softened the target before the Panzers rolled in and broke up the counterattack after they passed through. It could drop a 43.5-kilogram high-explosive shell on a target over 13 kilometers away — far enough that the crews firing it never saw what they hit, and the men on the receiving end never heard the gun that killed them.

The "Immergrün" — "Evergreen" — was the gun that was always there. Always in the order of battle. Always behind the line, waiting for the fire mission. Not glamorous. Not famous. But absolutely essential to every operation the Wehrmacht conducted from 1939 to 1945.
