Tiger I, tactical number S33. 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich." Somewhere on this tank, a symbol appeared, one that had no business being painted on a German heavy tank on the Eastern Front. A symbol of luck. And everybody has a different story about how it got there.

Some say the commander's wife was the daughter of a foreign diplomat, and the symbol was her influence.

Some say one of the crew found a ring bearing the mark, and they painted it on the hull for good fortune.

Others say an officer brought it back himself after training in China with Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist forces before the war, and it rode with him into combat.

The truth? Nobody knows. The myth is the point. Out of every Tiger I that rolled off the line, S33 is the one that carries a mystery, and in a war where tank crews measured life expectancy in weeks, a crew that believed in luck was a crew that kept fighting.
