By the time the Ausf. L rolled off the line in mid-1942, the Panzer III had been the backbone of Germany's armored divisions for years - Poland, France, the Low Countries, North Africa, Barbarossa. The L variant brought the longer 5 cm KwK 39 gun and added spaced armor to the mantlet and hull front, a desperate upgrade to keep this aging design relevant against thicker Allied armor. It fought from the dunes of Tunisia to the steppes outside Stalingrad. By 1943 it would be eclipsed by the Panzer IV and the new big cats - but the Ausf. L is the Panzer III at its peak, the version that defined the early-war German tank crew experience.
